Vouni (follow the signs), 25944328
Tue-Sun 12:00-16:00, 19:30-23:00
Food: ★★★½☆ 3.5/5
Service: ★★★☆☆ 3/5
Ambiance: ★★★½☆ 3.5/5

Probably the best mountain restaurant in Cyprus because:
1) Even though it is done up it is very much traditional.
In the center of the beautiful and unspoiled village of Vouni, including a small courtyard, a lobby where they put tables for smokers as it is all glass (“tzamaria”) and an inside place with stone walls.
2) The food is traditional but not standard, and very creative.
The cuisine is Greek with a set menu that changes every week,
3) The food is A LOT.
Even though you might want to order extra of some a la carte choices DON’T unless substituted from some of the standard courses as it is unlikely you will eat everything.
4) The dessert is not a simple traditional sweetened fruit, but a chocolate “orgasm” as Fedra calls it, as well as other pies.
5) The owners (an actress and a theater director) are not only super friendly, but super cool. Don’t worry, you will know who they are.
6) It is not a hangout for christenings, kids birthdays, weddings, or any other local “event” like a lot of village restaurants, but a small and cute place that gets full with normal people that like to eat good food. Bookings are advised.
7) The prices are reasonable, especially relative to the other places around. 20EUR per set menu is not extremely cheap, but the quality and quantity justify every cent.

I got frowned upon regarding Orea Ellas as many people some think the service has an “attitude” and the food is not that good. I would like to emphasize that the owner and cook might be particular, but when I don’t mind as I find them entertaining. Furthermore, when the food is good I don’t really care about the service at a taverna (this is not the case when I pay for good service too like in more up market places). Secondly, I particularly like the fact that you will never get bored of it as the menu changes often and this makes it, in my opinion, much more interesting. After 15 years it is still worth visiting.

  1. I’m sorry, but this is not the idea that I formed when I went to this restaurant about a year ago. The food was completely lacking any imagination and I would never call it “traditional”, as it was more Greek than Cypriot. Of course the place is called “η ωραία ελλάς” but nevertheless you shouldn’t write that the food is traditional. The owners’ question when they saw us was whether or not we had a reservation (the place was completely empty, by the way) and they stated that they only work by reservations. Nevertheless, they let us know that they could cook for us but I was definitely not excited with the food. I don’t remember any sort of chocolate orgasm at the end, but then again, it’s been a while. Still, the other place just across the street at Vouni called “TAKIS” is much better and unpretentious and, if I remember well, cheaper.
Also, a general comment for this blog/site. It would be nice if you guys could write something about who you are, so that people know whether or not this is a funded or independent site. If it is indeed independent, can anyone write a critique? Because I’ve been around some agrotouristic houses and have many things to write, both good and bad. Thank you 🙂

  2. Hi Ioli. Thanks for your comment! Alyways good to get a diversified view of a place :). You can find out more about us at the very top menu (where it says About Us), and of course, feel free to ask more questions if you need more info. The site is completely independent and everything is written by the same person to avoid any misunderstandings. You can’t post your own critique from scratch but suggestions on places are very welcome for us to try and comments on those are even more welcome!
PS you can ask your sister about me, she knows more than she should!!

  3. sorry ennoousa About > C&P people ke oxi About Us sto panw meros tis selidas

  4. Oh my god the writing up there is so small I looked so hard the first few times and didn’t see anything! Will definitely ask my sister! 🙂

  5. I hear differnt things about it but I think it is really nice and different. Wherever w they serve the same thing: mezedes. Sometimes better than others, but still the same!

  6. I think what is special about this place is its’ ambiance. Very relaxing and welcoming place. The food is not your typical cypriot meze but consist of mainly greek dishes of which most were very tasty indeed. I think the Cypriot and Proud write is spot on.
I would also add that Vouni is a wonderful Cypriot village to have a stroll in

  7. We visited this tavern today 26/08/2012 after reading the critique written above. We drive from Nicosia to go there and believe me this was the worst tavern we ever visited. When we arrived there the owner suggested meze without to tell us that we had the choice to order a portion. We have been charged 20 Euros per person to eat sausages from a much known German supermarket but they called it “loukaniko lamias”…….. “sarmadakia” from the can called home made, “piperia florinis” from the can called again home made …… for GOD’s sake, people know what they are eating. The salad for 4 persons was made in a small plate (toooooo poor), the aperitifs I think that was just for 2 persons not 4, and the main course in that MEZE was only 1 SMALL piece for each person of hamburger (in size of meatballs), chicken and pork!!!! We had also a small kid with us and the owner suggested ordering a portion for the kid. They brought him a plate with 2 small hamburger (like meatballs again) with frozen pre-cooked potatoes and they charged 10 Euros for this!! When I asked the owner why they charged the kid’s portion so much, he was very rude and he told me “this is what we charge madam”! And finally at the end the grate desert was 2 small rizecreams that we had to share 4 persons!!!!!!!!! This is UNACCEPTABLE. You cannot write a review and mention that it worth’s every cent for such a restaurant. Finally is time to start showing some respect to the people and stop writing reviews just because the restaurant owners paid for it. And the owners of the restaurant have to respect their customers. They cannot serve readymade food and call it home made. It is unacceptable to charge 80 Euros for 4 meze that didn’t even include 4 portions of food!! Certainly I will visit Cyprus Tourism Organization to report this restaurant.

    • Hi Maria. I am sorry you had such an experience. The menu changes very often obviously you have had a completely different experience than me. We had A LOT of food and the service was ok.
The reviews are NOT paid I do not understand in what way I am not showing respect if I write about my experience. As mentioned a few times, it is strictly Cypriot and Proud’s opinion. I am really sorry you feel this way, but this is why the reviews are open for comments so that everyone can share their own experience.

  8. Magnificent put up, very informative. I ponder why the opposite experts of this sector do not notice this. You must proceed your writing. I am sure, you have a huge readers’ base already!|What’s Happening i’m new to this, I stumbled upon this I’ve discovered It absolutely useful and it has helped me out loads. I hope to give a contribution & aid different customers like its aided me. Good job.

  9. Visited this restaurant on the 10/12/2017! The food was ok nothing special and nothing that we couldn’t eat!!! Definitely, not superb and a little bit over priced! Indeed, it does not reflect the impression you get after reading the review of this website!! Expected so much more… something that really spoiled it for us was that we asked for the bill and offered a dessert that sounded that was on the house.. we had our dessert and when the bill came we were charged 4.50 per dessert! It is important to add here that the dessert was not on the menu and we weren’t told the price! Paid and left but definitely not going back there! The dessert alone added a 25% on our bill! We felt cheated!!! Please note… that we r not very fussy customers!! It’s the first we felt compelled to complain!!!

    • Hi Anna. you may be right as the review is 4 years old. I haven’t visited it in the last couple of years so I can’t judge objectively. So sorry to hear what happened though. And the thing with the dessert is indeed unacceptable!
