Finding and promoting these sort of places is why I wanted to start Cypriot and Proud in the first place. This is exactly why we should be proud: because our island gives us the ability in 40 minutes to go from a busy city centre to a small village, where we can enjoy homemade brunch with an extremely large selection of marmalades and jams for 10€.
With no promotion whatsoever, Elli in Kato Drys has managed to make her home-made jams, marmalades and chutneys internationally famous…as if she needs promotion! Her products are of such great quality that word of mouth alone attracts customers .
She makes everything herself in her small kitchen in the village centre, and in order to encourage customers to try out her jams and marmalades she makes brunch for them, accommodating one group of 6-13 people per sitting. Don’t be fooled, it is not a restaurant but more like private dining on the porch of an old house, as you are literally dining on Elli’s veranda. Apart from offering a choice of more than 20 jars of marmalade and jams, she makes home made scones, banana bread that is to die for together with 3 more types of bread, home made halloumi and other cheeses that are truly excellent and a selection of mixed yoghurts with vanilla, nuts, raisins, fruit and marmalade that I could eat every morning for the rest of my life. As if this isn’t enough, she also serves fried eggs and bacon to end the brunch, just in case you are hungry.
She has no idea how good she is and she could easily charge double but she is too humble to do it. Also, by serving brunch for only 10€ she gives people a chance to try her fantastic jams, marmalades and chutneys which cost merely 5.50-6.00€. Needless to say we each left with three jars as I had to take home the raspberry and pure vanilla marmalade, the apricot, amaretto & almond jam and the hot curried tomato chutney. I really wanted to be different and get something like carrot & cinnamon or rum & raisin marmalade, but maybe next time. The only places you can find them are inside Get Fresh sandwiches and, of course, her kitchen/shop in Kato Drys that is worth the 40 minute drive from either Nicosia or Limassol (right before Lefkara).

  1. amaretto & almond jam and the hot curried tomato chutney=> tell me you are kidding! these sound devine!!!!!

    εντωμεταξύ, για το brunch, πρέπει να πας σε παρέα με τόσα άτομα, ή πας μόνος σου και μπορείς να κάτσεις να το απολαύσεις;

    • Dustixws den mporis na pas monos sou epeidi i kopella ta ftiaxnein ola monin tis ke zita na exi minimum 6 atoma. Episis prepei oposdipote na tilefonisis 3-4 meres prin toulaxisto gia na ta proetimasei. Truly worth it!

  2. And don’t forget to tell them where you saw it 😉

  3. Elli was fantastic, her food was great, and the jams and chutneys were all delicious! Everyone will find a taste they love, and with Elli’s suggestions you will be fantasizing of eating the next jam/chutney meal before you leave!
Everything she had prepared for us was delicious, we apreciated the care and every serving suggestion she made.
Needless to say i left with a jar of apricot, amaretto and almond jam, tropical fruit and malibu jam, hott carried tomato chutney, and red onion and comandaria jam!
Kato drys looked lovely and would love to go back any time, soon!

Thank you for sugesting this to us, and thanks to all the friends to joined me for brunch! Ms Elli, everything was perfect!

  4. I’d like to say a HUGE thanks to Cypriot and Proud for writing this dreamy review and taking the time to come and see us a couple of months ago. I’m so very grateful and amazed that people are still showing an interest in our ‘Big Breakfasts’ after this time! Our budget is tiny and does not allow for costly advertising but this simple review has introduced us to some WONDERFUL people that have really ‘understand’ the concept and are genuinely interested and very enthusiastic about our preserves…that, after all, is the point of the Breakfasts!! This simple review is the only thing that has ‘got through’ to people and more importantly the ‘right type’ of people:-)
I’m really am so, so grateful because things are very slow in the village but down to Cypriot and Proud we still have some lovely visitors coming by:-)
Thank you so very, very much and also to all the super people we have met and who have taken the time and effort to come and see us. I know it’s not that close…but it’s not that far either!!! Hopefully the jams are worth the drive:-) THANKS!!!

    • Thank you so much Elli for your kind words and for everything you generally offer!!!!! JAR PRESERVES is worth it!

  5. Thank you Cypriot and proud for turning brunch into a
mega experience by suggesting JAR PRESERVES. Elli is great and the big breakfast she prepares is the way to start a relaxing Sunday. We all loved it there today.

    • Thank you Angelos for trusting Cypriot and Proud! Elli is actually fantastic, I plan to re-visit her as well this weekend.

  6. Thank you for this post, and thank you for supporting lovely and talented Elli! I have tried many of Elli’s creations time and time again. For my daughter’s christening I have given to each family invited her amazing raspberry and pure vanilla jam (which is to die for!). I have eaten the branch you describe so lovingly with friends and it was a unique experience. My kitchen is never without her jams and preserves. If you have not visited Kato Drys yet, now is your time. Go for it!!! You will never regret it. …and try the orange, ginger and pineapple jam!

  7. This is quite an ok Website but I absolutely DESPISE the horrible name ‘CYPRIOT AND PROUD’ da-da-da-da. Really, proud are you? What does that have to do with anything, why would I want to know that? It is infantile and silly. It offends me. It belongs to a political faux patriotic propaganda ‘I’ve been wronged by everyone I love my Country – I’m better than everyone’ Website.

I won’t be reading this site again CYPRIOT AND PROUD. Please it is puke inducing.

    • I wasn’t going to approve this comment, but I decided to do it so that every single person can see why our country, our mentality and our backward thinking will probably never change and what kind of people stop Cyprus from moving forward.
      I am left without words.

  9. What an amazing place JAR is to enjoy brunch and [bonus] in such a beautiful traditional Cypriot village. Elli and her mother are always friendly, and I am never able to leave without buying at least one delicious jam and chutney! Try and go early so that you can have a walk around this wonderful village. I have booked to go in a couple of weeks with friends and I’m already excited at the prospect!

  10. What a fabulous place! Thanks to Elli, her Mum and her visiting Auntie, we had a perfect last morning in Kato Drys before returning to England. Jar Jams is unique, dishing up the most spectacular breakfast, incorporating Elli’s delicious jams and chutneys, with a continuous stream of home made goodies – scones, cakes, cheeses, egg & bacon – all prepared to an incredibly high standard and beautifully presented but really delightful people. All for €10!! A definite five stars from us.
