In my head there are 3 top “magiria” (cooked food) in Lefkosia, Vasiliki, Mattheos and Siantris. All three are fantastic, but each is slightly better in different things: Vasiliki has the best food, Mattheos has the best ambiance, and Siantris has the best combination. As in all of the “magiria”, the list of dishes changes every day and the food is cooked in the morning or the night before, including ospria (lentils, beans, peas etc), and usually one type of each meat (lamb, chicken, pork, beef or rabbit).
When Mr Siantris suggested I had the spaghetti I was disappointed and said that I didn’t come to a “magirio” to have pasta…all he said was, “don’t be such a snob and try it”, and even brought a half a portion for us to share as an extra dish. Wasn’t I embarrassed for my behavior! It is one of the specialties, not because Mr Siantris is a great Italian cook, but because they add the jus from the slow cooked pork together with grated halloumi cheese, killer combo.
Generally the vine leaves with minced meat (koupepia) and the beans are very nice, and so is any meat/spaghetti combo.
Its prices might be slightly higher than any other “magirio” but the variety and the quality compensate for it.
