One thing is certain: there is no other place like this in Nicosia. Porfirios family started off as a butcher shop in Peristerona village a 25 minute drive from the city. At one point the owners wanted to make more money and had started to use their meat to make “kleftiko” once a week for the locals in the patio across their butcher shop. The only thing there was on the table were a couple of tomatoes and cucumbers, an onion and a lemon. If you wanted drinks you had to help yourself to drinks from the fridge (beers and soft drinks). Each portion of lamp came with its potatoes wrapped in paper straight from the brick stove. The word “humble” is an understatement.
Around 10 years later, not much has changed except that the restaurant is about twice the size, it opens two times a week, and the customers have increased. One can see all kinds of people: from business men, to socialites and politicians coming from all over the country. It only serves “kleftiko”, with a few tomatoes and cucumbers (as 10 years ago). Do not expect any luxuries, but the food itself says it all!
*slow cooked lamp in a brick stove that takes around 12 hours to cook. A lot of tavernas make it, as well as places serving just this (that you have to pre-order since portions are fixed)
