If you have lived abroad (or before the 80’s) there is a big chance you miss food markets, like I do. Apart from the whole concept of walking outside and buying fresh fruit and veggies directly from the producers, more often than not prices tend to be much lower. At least this was the case in OHI (OXI) market last Wednesday. Don’t get too excited as very often the products can be more expensive, as well as pumped up with pesticides and non-organic fertilisers, but at least you have the option to walk around and choose from a wide selection of sellers, rather than the limited choice of the supermarkets. Merchants shouting their latest offers, local farmers calling you to try their products, and old city residents doing their weekly shopping is only a part of what one can enjoy while walking through the market.
Apart from the standard fruit and veggies one can find dried fruit and nuts, fresh bread, traditional sweets and among those, a Utopia stand. Utopia is a relatively new multi-functional space, which works mostly as an organic shop. It also hosts several events, including cinema nights and themed food cultural nights. As if that wasn’t enough, one also has the option to buy cooked food from their market stand where they sell their organic products. There is no place to eat there but it can be taken to the Utopia space merely 2 minutes walk. Usually the choice is between soup and salads (at 4.50€ each), as well as their freshly baked bread and cookies, all super fresh and very tasty. Apart from the market itself we particularly love the whole concept of Utopia. Don’t expect a fancy lunch or a gourmet experience, but merely a casual and unique experience all together.
The market is open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7:30-16:30. Utopia is open daily but offers cooked lunch only when the market is open.
