I remember during our summer holidays at Protaras when I was growing up, if we wanted fish we would go to Kalamies, if we wanted “meze” we would go to “O Costas sas”, and if we wanted more casual grilled meat meze we would go to the Square Tavern.
It has a very “local” feel and offers the standard “meze” with very good fresh ingredients (most of which are home grown by the owners of the tavern) and very tasty grilled meat. Even though eating at the Square Tavern is not a life changing experience and a must-eat-before-you-die kind of tavern it is a very good option for a casual and quiet night with good quality food.
There is the option to order a-la-carte,- the menu, includes a wide selection of the usual suspects (lamb chops, kebab, sieftalia, grilled chicken and liver) as well as the standard dips and starters. The Greek salad is very good as all the vegetables are home-grown. Both the pork and chicken fillets were very tasty and extremely soft, and so was the kebab, but the “gyros” was a bit dry. The “sieftalia”, even though quite good in flavour were a bit too burnt on the outside for my taste. The fries were one of the highlights as their potatoes are also home grown and freshly cut, and so is the watermelon that the friendly gentleman (and owner) brought to our table at the end of our meal.
For less than 20€ each with Cypriot wine it was quite good. For good value for money and a simple but good meal Square tavern is worth it.
