I have stopped complaining that we don’t have enough seafood restaurants in Cyprus (with good food at least), and have set a goal to discover as many as possible. If you read Cypriot and Proud posts you should know by now that, in Limassol I am a big fan of The Old Neighborhood mostly for grilled fish and plain but fantastic quality dishes (at high prices). Fat Fish is a winner for location and a combo of ambiance, food and good wine, and my latest discovery, Koursaros for a seafood tavern with a Greek touch, i.e. good seafood pasta, garlic prawns, stuffed calamari, and generally more creative dishes rather than plain grilled or fried fish.
Even though it is not by the sea but located near Pareklissia area in the suburbs of Limassol, it is still quite cute and it reminds me more of a village taverna. There is also a lovely internal patio where we enjoyed our dinner “al fresco”.
Mr Proud Cypriot insisted that we had plain grilled dishes because in Cyprus it is the safest thing to have. I almost took his side, but right when the waiter came I decided I will not give in and risk it. Fortunately for me, I was right. The garlic prawns were very good, served in a small pan and dipped in a light sauce of oil and garlic. The grilled cuttlefish, which we unfortunately had without the ink at Mr Proud Cypriot’s request, was excellent and the stuffed calamari with feta and peppers was very tasty and fresh. I also think that the manually cut fries, which did not taste like they were defrosted, make a difference to the restaurant’s quality and the effort they make to offer fresh ingredients. What I also liked is that they offered a selection of good Greek wine, that makes a big difference for the wine lovers, rather than offering only a local list. The only thing I didn’t like was that they thought it would be interesting to offer Greek salad with a twist (carrots, coloured peppers and croutons) whereas, I prefer the traditional one with no surprises! Unfortunately we didn’t have the lobster pasta which the restaurant is famous for, but I kept it as a reason to return.
Whether or not it is the best seafood taverna in Cyprus is yet to be decided, but one thing is certain: it is good to have the option to enjoy variations of the standard grilled or fried fish we usually have, assuming of course that the quality remains high. Restaurants, especially tavernas have to finally find ways to differentiate themselves while retauning their standards. Return? Yes!
