Today it was proven that, if you have zero expectations the likelihood of you being impressed and satisfied coming out of it is much higher. When I passed by Pepe Burro the day before my meal for a sneak preview it looked like an 80’s take away place, forgotten and empty, something like Fat Boy (yes, it still exists in Limassol). I even warned my Proud Cypriot friend that would join me that he would be taking a risk. You can imagine my surprise when I realized it is a very new and clean, modern and inviting Mexican take-away, delivery and eat-in venue.
It is one of a kind in Cyprus as it follows the make-your-own policy without a limit in the sauces and greens that can be added to your Mexican sandwich, which works well if you are picky and greedy like myself. I also find it very popular abroad but less popular in the Cypriot community, probably because us Cypriots have the tendency to over-do it in all-you-can-eat type places. Another reason I was pleasantly surprised by the way Pepe Burro works is that it reminds me of my London times when I used to go to these kind of places for my “polite junk food” dose.
So how does it work? You choose your base (burrito, quesadilla, rice or tacos), then you add your choice of meat (chicken, beef steak, BBQ pork, chilli con carne and 9 other types of meat (!) and veggie options), and then you can add whatever else you want in terms of salads, sauces, onions, beans, cheese and other extras. Prices are quite reasonable and start from 4.70€ (veggie) to 7.90€ (prawn).
Needless to say that the Proud Cypriot friend’s burrito was as big as it gets and enough for one person and a proper Mexican sandwich, whereas my tacos that included 3 of them were very good, especially since I could choose three different fill-up combos. We also shared a chicken fajita salad with sour cream and guacamole that was needed, for me at least, as the tacos portion was a bit small for one person.
Apart from the make-your-own Mexican sandwich they also have a good selection of Mexican traditional dishes like chimichangas (my next meal), empanadas, nachos as well as a selection of On-the-Grill meat dishes. These include, burgers, chorizo sausage and pork belly steak.
Not only we left quite satisfied and fulfilled we didn’t feel stuffed at all, which is the usual sensation after Mexican food. For 10€ each with a drink, a meal and a salad to share we had a pleasant, quick and enjoyable lunch break.

Halloween is way over but pumpkin season is not! I never used to like pumpkin, mainly because I hated “kolokotes” (Cypriot pumpkin pastries), but then after randomly having pumpkin bread, pumpkin pies, pumpkin ravioli...
