Over the last 1-2 years the old city seems to be the place to be. I am particularly happy that we have finally gone back to our roots and started appreciating cute and traditional little places rather than the massive and commercial cafés and restaurants. This is exactly why I was happy to find Serreoiki Mpougatsa behind Phaneromeni church, because it is small, it sells fantastic traditional Greek and Cypriot pastries at very good prices that go with the whole old-city-concept as well as with the economic environment.
All of the pastries are directly imported from Serres, the Greek village that makes the original “mpougatsa” (the traditional puff pastry originating from Constantinopole and Smyrna), and are cooked inside the small take-away/delivery shop. What is a must-try apart from the savoury pastries (“mpougatsa” with minced meat, spinach or cheese) is the sweet “mpougatsa” with a soft cream filling and sugar on top, which is also the highlight.
My favourite time of the day for this little place is the morning as there is the option of healthy yoghurt muesli and a 1.50€ coffee as well as sandwiches with home-made bread baked on the day. The choice might be small, but a short selection is much preferred rather having a long list of innovative sandwich combinations and pastries that end up being over-complicated. All of the above can also be delivered at your door with only a 5€ minimum spending requirement, which, apart from breakfast, it is also a good option for lunch or an afternoon snack at the office.
Finding this type of humble places with such good snacks and sweets that remain family run make one indeed, Cypriot and Proud.
