Having lived in Limassol for a year now I had not yet visited one of the most famous cafes in Cyprus. This was not right and I recently decided to correct my faux pas. The Colours café is not famous because it the most hip and modern café, but because it has some of the best cakes, sweets and pastries in the area. Its all-time famous ice cream is another reason to go, although in the end we chose the cakes over the ice cream.
It was a sunny and warm October afternoon, the perfect day for a late afternoon coffee and cake (especially since my beach days are almost over for this year). We started off with a Cypriot coffee and a filter coffee which (despite the impeccable service) arrived slightly late. It was only when they came accompanied with that we decided to ignore the delay, and also ignore the fact that it was 3,80€ for a Cypriot coffee (!) and 5€ for a filter coffee.
Even though the petit fours were enough we had to try their cakes, the main reason a Proud Cypriot friend and I went there in the first place. My friend chose a peanut caramel cake from the window, a combination of soft chocolate ganache, roasted peanuts, all on a caramel chocolate cake that was excellent, served perfectly decorated in a large plate. I, of course, had ice cream, mainly because I had to see for myself what all the fuss was about. The fact that the Colours Café ice cream is of the Italian type, i.e. more creamy and soft, was a good thing for me as I like the particular type. My pistachio, tiramisu and biscuit flavours were a good choice but they would probably have tasted better if I hadn’t had them all together. They were all extremely sweet and creamy making the combination very heavy, and all of this because of my greediness.
In all honesty, my favourite part was the coffee and the little sweets that came with it. I would love to try the pastries as well, or go for continental breakfast in their fantastic patio overlooking the Four Seasons gardens with a great sea-view. At the end of the day, even if the coffee was 5€ I prefer to give it to Colours Cafe than Starbucks, and enjoy it in a much more private and quiet environment with free mini cakes as well!
