I love it when I find good tavernas as my list of options becomes longer. Even though Achillion doesn’t have a strong edge the food is very good, its location is central and the ambiance is fairly pleasant. The dim lighting and the fun buzz make you want to down a few “quarters” of Zivania and mingle with everyone around you.
It has probably been there for a long time but I don’t hear about it as often as I would expect. It is situated in the old part of Agious Omologites and what seems to be an old “kafenes” making it a good hiding place for its loyal visitors. The fact that it has a bar (first time I ever saw a taverna with a bar), also attracts people who want to have a drink and nibble some chopped “chiromeri” (dried pork) and adds to the whole lively ambiance. If you are a smoker you are likely to be extra happy (apologies in advance if I get you in trouble but I feel I have to say it). The good thing is it doesn’t get too stuffy.
The “meze” selection is standard with the “halloumi”, bulgur with tomato, kebab, lamb chops, grilled mushrooms and greens with eggs. Despite the fact that we didn’t have any surprises everything was of very good quality. I really liked the soft “halloumi” served extra hot, the tasty lamb chops and the fresh greens. I also appreciated the fact that it had a selection of Greek wine as well as Cypriot wine, which, when served with some “chiromeri” while waiting your friends tastes even better.
The truth is it could add an extra dish to differentiate itself, but if you want standard “meze” with fresh products, tasty meat all produced with love and care then Achillion is worth trying out.
