Truth be told, although in a few of my latest posts I included a couple of must-visit cafes (Brew Lab and Nicosia Tea Shop), I am not such a big sit-at-a-café-for-hours fan. The main reason is lack of time, or Kafenio o Platanos Nicosiarather, choosing to do other things with my free time. Unless of course it is 9 or 10 in the morning, which in my opinion is the best time to enjoy a nice café, either by myself, with a friend or for a work meeting. Anyway, that’s just me. It doesn’t mean that I don’t appreciate unique places where one can enjoy a coffee, tea, a refreshing drink or even nibbles. Like Brew Lab and Nicosia Tea Shop, I found Platanos to be a place that can easily become a hang out due to its relaxed ambiance, its to-the-point menu and the value for money which is provided.
Even though it is situated in Kaimakli it hasn’t prevented Platanos from building up a “clientele”, rather the opposite! I went in the afternoon but apparently the busiest time is in the evenings. Together with instant and Cypriot coffee, it offers French press by A Κχoffee project –a pop-up that offers probably one of the best coffees I have had in Cyprus, a large selection of local tea and local refreshing drinks like “soumada” (almond drink) and rose milk. In terms of food one can get goodies Kafenio o Platanos Nicosia(mostly cakes), from Qboo, another personal favourite and in terms of alcohol, a few local options are available.
So what is so special about it? Apart from the fact that it uses products from A Kχoffee Project and Qboo, what did it for me was the “kafenio”- style ambiance in an avant-garde way with old doors being used as tables, funky pendant lamps, antique TVs used as ornaments and generally a good mix of the old and the new. Another highlight are the regular events that the owners organise that vary from live music nights, to retro game days (or rather, Retro Games and special events like “loukoumades” at Theofania day, hangover cures for after-parties and more. What I didn’t like was the smoking in the inside space. Sorry guys, this is 2014, it’s about time we “go clean”.
Overall it is one of my favourite recent openings, and a must-visit for all kinds of people –especially the ones that are looking for something different. What’s definitely worth mentioning is that our bill of 3 euros for a tea and a refreshing “soumada” was not shabby, another reason for a return!
