Onasagorou 74, LEFKOSIA (NICOSIA)
Mon-Fri 16:00-23:00. Sat-Sun 14:00-23:00
Regardless of whether or not it is a good idea, it is original, I’ll give them that! Looking at its small shop size and the specialisation of products I bet it’s profitable as well. I just hope, for their sake, that it doesn’t become the new frozen yogurt!
I kind of like the idea of “modernising” something traditional and finding more ways you can eat it. It’s like discovering fun ways of carrying on our customs. Loukoumades have been around for centuries (and as my little paper box said, probably millennia as honey tokens were given to the ancient Greeks as a reward!). In the same way, I looked at my little “loukoumades” box with vanilla ice cream and walnuts as a reward to my 4-day diet!
What is most surprising is how big the menu is (especially given the fact that it consist of mostly these small, fried balls of dough called “loukoumades”). Apart from the obvious honey syrup one can enjoy them with ice cream, nuts, cinnamon, chocolate praline and fruit (dried and sugary or fresh). I am also curious to see what the savoury “loukoumades” served with cheese, lountza and ham combinations taste like!
I rather enjoyed my freshly fried honey tokens as they were extra sweet toned down by the vanilla ice cream and walnuts. I also liked the fact that they were not too soft. 1.80€ to 2.70€ for 6 was not bad (nor is the range of 5.60-9.20€ for 24 of them). The only thing I didn’t like was the fact that it opens at 16:00 in the afternoon, a bit late for me to enjoy dessert after lunch!
